Where resin differs from filament in terms of safety
Filament is solid 3D printing plastic: you handle the spool with bare hands, keep it on a shelf and print in a living room. Photopolymer resin is a liquid polymer that hardens under 405 nm ultraviolet light. While it is liquid, treat it the way you treat household chemicals: gloves, ventilation and a tidy workbench. None of this is a reason to avoid LCD printing - set up the workflow once and then simply stick to it.
Gloves: nitrile, every time
Liquid resin irritates skin, and the catch is that sensitivity accumulates: a reaction can appear after months of working without protection, right when it feels like nothing will happen to you. So:
- put on nitrile gloves for every operation with liquid resin: pouring, washing, removing the model, cleaning the vat;
- if resin gets on your skin, wash it off with soap and water right away and switch to fresh gloves.
Ventilation
Printing releases vapour - this is not a machine for a closed living room. A separate room or constant airflow works best; keep the printer's lid closed while it prints.
Washing: IPA or water
After printing the model is coated with uncured resin. It comes off with a 5-10 minute wash:
- standard resin - isopropyl alcohol;
- water-wash resin - plain water.
Water-wash is easier at home: no alcohol smell and no IPA supply to maintain. But the used water is not harmless - it carries dissolved resin and must not go down the drain.
Curing under UV
After washing and drying, the model goes under a UV lamp for 2-5 minutes. Without curing the surface stays tacky and the part stays soft and under-polymerised; resin reaches full strength only after this step. Until the part is cured, handle it with gloves on. Supports come off easiest right after washing, while the part is still yielding.
Disposing of wash liquid and leftovers
Never pour used wash liquid down the drain. The routine is simple:
- leave the container in sunlight or under a UV lamp - the dissolved resin polymerises and settles as a solid;
- the hardened residue is ordinary solid plastic and goes out with household waste;
- the same applies to failed prints and supports: cure first, then discard.
Children and pets
Store resin in the dark, at room temperature, out of reach of children and animals. Keep the bottle tightly closed and in its original labelled container. Resin cures in light: a clear bottle on a windowsill turns into a block of plastic over time.
