What TPU is

TPU is thermoplastic polyurethane. It behaves like rubber: the part bends, stretches and returns to shape. Hardness is given on the Shore scale: 95A is about the sole of a trainer, 85A is noticeably softer, closer to a car door seal.

How to print it

Nozzle: 220-240 °C
Bed: 30-50 °C
Cooling: light, 20-40 %
Speed: 15-30 mm/s - the rule that matters most
Retraction: minimal, 0.5-1.5 mm; direct drive strongly preferred

Soft filament behaves like rope: pushed quickly, it buckles inside the extruder and jams. On a Bowden setup TPU 95A still prints; 85A barely does.

What to print

Cases for equipment, gaskets and seals, damping feet, straps, tool grips, robot wheels, protective bumpers. Anything that must flex, absorb a blow or seal a joint.

Geometry matters

A thin TPU wall collapses; a thick one is nearly rigid. Infill works as a softness dial: 10-15 % gives a yielding part, 40 % and above a springy, dense one. TPU bridges and overhangs poorly - design so that supports are not needed.

Storage

TPU is more hygroscopic than most plastics. Wet filament bubbles at the nozzle and prints a torn surface. Drying: 6-8 hours at 50-55 °C.
