What breaks a part outdoors
Three factors work on it at once: ultraviolet, heat and moisture. UV slowly degrades the polymer - the part looks intact but grows brittle over time and cracks at the first load. The sun heats things up: a dark part in the open, and even more so behind car glass, gets noticeably hotter than the air. In Batumi a third factor joins in - sea humidity that stays year round.
A filament for an outdoor part has to survive all three. Below, material by material, from the wrong choice to the right one.
Why PLA does not last outside
PLA is the easiest 3D printing plastic to work with, but the outdoors is not its habitat. Two reasons:
- Heat. In a car in the sun a PLA part warps at 50-60 °C already. A bracket that sat straight all winter sags by July.
- UV and moisture. Over time they make the part brittle: it looks whole and snaps at the first real load.
For a mockup that spends a couple of weeks on a balcony, PLA will do. For anything meant to live outside for months, it will not.
PETG - the easy middle
PETG prints almost as easily as PLA and ignores moisture - half the battle already in a seaside climate. It holds up to roughly 75-80 °C, and outdoor items are among its intended uses: mounts, containers, plant waterers, garden fittings. No enclosure needed.
Its weak spot is heat. In direct sun and in closed heated spaces (behind car glass) the temperature climbs past that, and the part softens. For shade, rain and moderate sun PETG is enough; the hottest spots call for the next candidate.
ASA - the outdoor answer
ASA is the same family as ABS, with the butadiene replaced by an acrylate. Butadiene is exactly what ultraviolet destroys, so ASA does not yellow or crack in the sun - it is what goes on car bodies and outdoor housings. It holds to 95-100 °C: behind a windscreen or on a south wall that is margin, not the limit.
Printing it is harder than PETG:
- Nozzle: 240-260 °C
- Bed: 100-110 °C
- Cooling: off or minimal
- Enclosure: required
- Ventilation: needed

ASA or ABS
A common question with a short answer: outdoors, ASA. ABS holds 80-100 °C and takes acetone finishing beautifully, but in the sun it yellows and turns brittle within a season. ABS is the material for indoor enclosures and parts that need post-processing; under open sky, pick its weatherproof relative.
