What ASA is
ASA is the same family as ABS, with the butadiene replaced by an acrylate. Butadiene is exactly what ultraviolet destroys: an ABS part in the sun yellows and turns brittle within a season. ASA does not - it is what goes on car bodies and outdoor housings.
How to print it
- Nozzle: 240-260 °C
- Bed: 100-110 °C
- Cooling: off or minimal
- Enclosure: required
- Ventilation: needed, as with ABS
ASA is slightly fussier than ABS: the same shrinkage with a narrower temperature window. In exchange the surface comes out smoother.
What to print
Anything that will live under open sky: antenna and camera mounts, outdoor sensor housings, motorcycle and car parts, garden fittings, signs and plates. In Batumi the sun comes with sea humidity - ASA takes both.
ASA or PETG outdoors
PETG is easier to print and ignores moisture, but it softens at 75-80 °C, and behind glass in direct sun it gets hotter than that. ASA holds to 95-100 °C and does not degrade under UV. For a part behind a windscreen or on a south wall, ASA is the clear answer.
Storage
As ABS: a dry place, and 4-6 hours at 65-70 °C to dry it.
